Cosmic Canine Connection; Winter Solstice 2011

Astronomers will tell us that the Winter Solstice occurs, ’when the axial tilt of a planet’s polar hemisphere is furthest from its star,‘ or in our case - that bright orange globe in the heavens which we refer to as the sun. This year that event occurs on Dec. 22nd.
The Winter Solstice has been a time for celebration since the earliest man walked upright on our planet. Surviving the starving months was always cause for concern to Aboriginal people; a rising Midwinter sun (after the Longest Night) has impacted cultures around the globe giving all hope with the promise of new life and budding foliage. The gathering of the final harvest and the slaughtering of animals, which could not be fed through the coming winter months of January through March, was reason enough for feasting and so the celebrations began.
Ancient Egyptians ritually entombed their savior/god Osiris on the eve of the Winter Solstice; the priest would introduce a new born babe to their followers at first light of the new and longer day. Ancient Celts and their Druid priests built elaborate stone structures throughout Europe to mark the event and hold their many Midwinter rituals. Saturnalia and Bachanalia festivals took place in every Greek and Roman home and/or temple as their acknowledgement of Midwinter's arrival, eventually prompting Emperor Julius Caesar, in 46BC, to establish Dec. 25th, as the official date of the Winter Solstice. In the 3rd century Emperor Aurelian, attempting to merge Pagan celebrations with Christian feast days, declared Midwinter feastings to be the, ’Birthday of the Unconquered Sun.’ And in 1582 Pope Gregory XIII defined Dec. 25th, as a major Christian Feast Day and presented a new born babe, as a symbol of rebirth, to all followers.

In ancient Japan, in an effort to entice their Sun Goddess Amaterasu from her darkened cave and bring life giving light forth, much noise and merriment brought roaring crowds to their feet in ceremonies which are, today, incorporated into Japanese New Year’s celebrations.

We are now in the 21st century and living in a diverse, global society with many man-made religions and even more individual and/or personal spiritual beliefs. Tolerance is a gift, given to us by a Creator who showered mankind with freewill, a higher intelligence and the ability to discover and enjoy the wonders of the Universe. So whatever the reason, now is the season to send heartfelt Warm Winter Wishes to all.

Always striving to be the leader of the pack, and urged on by Apollo’s fiery sword, an Aries born often suffers dire consequences for its impulsive ways. This month we experience two cosmic events; a partial Solar Eclipse on Friday Nov. 25th, and a total Lunar Eclipse on Saturday Dec. 10th. The first can be viewed only by those living in southern South Africa and New Zealand, the second will be enjoyed only by those living in Asia and Australia.

Observed as the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and believed, by the ancients, to be a time when the sun (sol) actually stands still (sistere) while at its highest point in the noon sky on one day each year falling between June 21st & 24th. Appearances can be deceiving (Old Sol never stands still) yet our forebearers seldom missed an opportunity to hold a ritual, feast or celebration (we haven’t changed much, have we?) and this event would certainly be no exception.
Traditionally ritual fires were built in fields, honorable men would then demonstrate their courage by jumping over the flames and the remaining ashes would be spread over garden areas to assure healthy crops. Celts paid tribute to their Goddess Aine, the equivalent of the Roman Goddess Venus and the Greek Goddess Aphrodite, beseeching her favors to provide bountiful fall crops. In Ireland paying tribute to the Goddess Queen of Muster eventually (mid 19th century) gave way to Christianized fire rituals marking the eve of St John’s Feast Day. Legend has it that John’s mother, Elizabeth, lit a signal fire announcing that she had gone into labor and that all helping hands would be welcomed.
Several northern European countries recognize the June Solstice as a legal holiday and Midsummer Fire Festivals are celebrated throughout the world; from the small Fremont, WA community parade of nude cyclist to the week long Kupala Rites celebrated in Russia. Blending fire and water rituals young Russian ladies place small boats in waterways and attempt to interpret flow patterns which might reveal the names of their intended.
The solstice phenomenon marks the longest day/shortest night of the year and is commonly, and correctly, referred to as both the Start of Summer and/or Midsummer.

Spring Equinox

Celebrated as the Vernal (Spring) Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere March 20th, is the official end of winter this year and is marked by a day w/equal hours of sunlight and darkness. Those long, cold winter nights are well behind us now and Father Winter no longer has us in his icy grip. Four thousand years ago ancient people known as the Nineveh, living on the banks of the Tigris River near what is today Mosul, began this day at first light facing eastward in anticipation of the arrival of their Goddess Ishtar. Their Goddess of Romance was their promise of a new beginning and their belief in her fertility was unwavering. Likewise, Semitic speaking tribes of Syria and North Africa paid homage to their Queen of Heaven, Astarte, in much the same fashion. The Greeks too considered the Vernal Equinox to be a day of worship and readily adopted Astarte, renamed her Aphrodite, and began their veneration of the day w/dawn’s first light. Grecians also took the opportunity to welcome Persephone back from her 6 month banishment in Hade’s realm’s at this time and celebrated her return by joining in a warm welcome w/her mother Demeter, Goddess of Agriculture. To the west Celtic people paid tribute to their Goddess Olwin, whom they believed brought flowers to bloom on Mother Earth by the simple act of placing her footsteps on barren ground. Germanic tribes and Saxons of Northern Europe celebrated their Spring Equinox by giving eggs as gift in the name of their Goddess Eostre who was represented, symbolically, by a rabbit. These are all interesting myths, lore and faith based beliefs; all separated by immense time and massive distance yet the message remains the same: re-new, re-birth and rejoice!! As our lovely Blue Planet hurls itself thru time and space (towards the June Solstice) our daylight hours gradually expand in length and our spirits, minds and bodies rejuvenate themselves as well as we enjoy Mother Nature’s wonders, which are exploding around us. We’re beginning a 3 month venture when the Ram, Bull and Twins play host to Sol as he does his mystic, enchanting and rhythmic moves thru their constellations. Mars, Venus and Mercury impact us w/their influence and our personalities, emotions and ability to process information begin to take form. In a sense it is our own re-birth; a new beginning; a time to rejoice!! March Equinox, K9 Cosmic Connection, 2011

Celebrated as the Vernal (Spring) Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere March 20th, is the official end of winter this year and is marked by a day w/equal hours of sunlight and darkness. Those long, cold winter nights are well behind us now and Father Winter no longer has us in his icy grip.
Four thousand years ago ancient people known as the Nineveh, living on the banks of the Tigris River near what is today Mosul, began this day at first light facing eastward in anticipation of the arrival of their Goddess Ishtar. Their Goddess of Romance was their promise of a new beginning and their belief in her fertility was unwavering.
Likewise, Semitic speaking tribes of Syria and North Africa paid homage to their Queen of Heaven, Astarte, in much the same fashion. The Greeks too considered the Vernal Equinox to be a day of worship and readily adopted Astarte, renamed her Aphrodite, and began their veneration of the day w/dawn’s first light. Grecians also took the opportunity to welcome Persephone back from her 6 month banishment in Hade’s realm’s at this time and celebrated her return by joining in a warm welcome w/her mother Demeter, Goddess of Agriculture.
To the west Celtic people paid tribute to their Goddess Olwin, whom they believed brought flowers to bloom on Mother Earth by the simple act of placing her footsteps on barren ground. Germanic tribes and Saxons of Northern Europe celebrated their Spring Equinox by giving eggs as gift in the name of their Goddess Eostre who was represented, symbolically, by a rabbit.
These are all interesting myths, lore and faith based beliefs; all separated by immense time and massive distance yet the message remains the same: re-new, re-birth and rejoice!!
As our lovely Blue Planet hurls itself thru time and space (towards the June Solstice) our daylight hours gradually expand in length and our spirits, minds and bodies rejuvenate themselves as well as we enjoy Mother Nature’s wonders, which are exploding around us. We’re beginning a 3 month venture when the Ram, Bull and Twins play host to Sol as he does his mystic, enchanting and rhythmic moves thru their constellations. Mars, Venus and Mercury impact us w/their influence and our personalities, emotions and ability to process information begin to take form. In a sense it is our own re-birth; a new beginning; a time to rejoice!!

March Equinox K9Horoscope 3.20-6.21

Celebrated as the Vernal (Spring) Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere March 20th, is the official end of winter this year and is marked by a day w/equal hours of sunlight and darkness. Those long, cold winter nights are well behind us now and Father Winter no longer has us in his icy grip.
Four thousand years ago ancient people known as the Nineveh, living on the banks of the Tigris River near what is today Mosul, began this day at first light facing eastward in anticipation of the arrival of their Goddess Ishtar. Their Goddess of Romance was their promise of a new beginning and their belief in her fertility was unwavering.
Likewise, Semitic speaking tribes of Syria and North Africa paid homage to their Queen of Heaven, Astarte, in much the same fashion. The Greeks too considered the Vernal Equinox to be a day of worship and readily adopted Astarte, renamed her Aphrodite, and began their veneration of the day w/dawn’s first light. Grecians also took the opportunity to welcome Persephone back from her 6 month banishment in Hade’s realm’s at this time and celebrated her return by joining in a warm welcome w/her mother Demeter, Goddess of Agriculture.
To the west Celtic people paid tribute to their Goddess Olwin, whom they believed brought flowers to bloom on Mother Earth by the simple act of placing her footsteps on barren ground. Germanic tribes and Saxons of Northern Europe celebrated their Spring Equinox by giving eggs as gift in the name of their Goddess Eostre who was represented, symbolically, by a rabbit.
These are all interesting myths, lore and faith based beliefs; all separated by immense time and massive distance yet the message remains the same: re-new, re-birth and rejoice!!
As our lovely Blue Planet hurls itself thru time and space (towards the June Solstice) our daylight hours gradually expand in length and our spirits, minds and bodies rejuvenate themselves as well as we enjoy Mother Nature’s wonders, which are exploding around us. We’re beginning a 3 month venture when the Ram, Bull and Twins play host to Sol as he does his mystic, enchanting and rhythmic moves thru their constellations. Mars, Venus and Mercury impact us w/their influence and our personalities, emotions and ability to process information begin to take form. In a sense it is our own re-birth; a new beginning; a time to rejoice!!

Never lacking in leadership skills, those who are Arian born may occasionally lead their pack astray. There was surely a lack of communication recently when Cooper and his pack caused an upheaval in their home w/the chasing of a cat across a table. The Messenger God, Hermes, is gaining in strength as Helios arcs upwards to longer days making this season more favorable for Apollo’s followers.

Goals seem insurmountable in Winter’s gloom but that’s about to change - because the Twins offer a double whammy. It seems like it was only yesterday when my furry paws took to the keyboard bringing the first Caniscope forth, but alas - it’s been an entire year!! I’ve enjoyed every moment and I hope you have too. And on this, our First Caniscope Anniversary, I want to give a huge Paws Up!! to all of you who have made it so successful.
As I look upwards I realize that our giant, Golden Orb is slipping silently across the equator on this, the Fall Equinox, to bring us a day in which 24 hours are divided into equal amounts of daylight and darkness. For now, Summer is but a memory and the icy grip of Winter has yet to take control; Libra takes a turn and tries to bring balance into our sometimes hectic lives and dramatic relationships. So, here are my words of wisdom which, hopefully, will assist us all with achieving peace, harmony and accord while Venus rules.

Aries; The Ram 3.21-4.19
With Apollo in Cancer emotions may get the best of all Arian born pups. Both Luke and Leo, especially around the Full Moon of the 4th, will need more space and exercise if anyone expects harmony to triumph between these two Shelties. Dog park visits, longer walks and self-assurance will go a long way in stabilizing partnerships in any household. When Mars moves into the Lion’s Den on the 18th, some may get much more vocal.

Taurus; The Bull 4.20-5.20
When the Love Goddess moves into Virgo nothing is as simple nor as easy as it seems. Pepsi may find that the Huntress, Diana, poses a threat near the 5th, and household peace may shatter w/out some intervention. Our feline ‘furend,‘ Chloe, may also find that it’s wiser to tip-toe around situations than take a head-on approach. Everyone should feel more at ease after the 15th.

Gemini; The Twins 5.21-6.21
The Messenger visits with Isis making it difficult for Kolchak to find anything agreeable in the kitchen. No chef may be able to please the finicky palate of the Gemini born until Mercury moves into Libra’s domain on the 9th. As Selena enters into the Twin’s abode on the 7th, Tommy T may find it easier to match his artistic wit with a long lost ’furend’s’ personality.

Cancer; The Crab 6.22-7.22
The War God promotes vengeance until the 17th, and the tempers of all Cancer born could flair near the 9th, when Luna moves into view. Hurley, my Border Collie ’furend,’ could well show her dislike towards her pack-mate’s actions but extra walks on the beach may curb any anxiety between these two. Capt. Scooter may find that sharing a bone with his ‘Little Miss,’ not be to his liking either but Mars moves on and peace is restored quickly.

Leo; The Lion 7.23-8.22
In the Lion’s Den the Leo born will find that their sense of fairness does double duty with emotions ruling on the 12th. In an effort to bring hope, cheer and comfort to others both Chase and Sully may find that when Aries makes his appearance on the 16th, things get done much more easily and efficiently.

Virgo; The Virgin 8.23-9.22
When Hermes enters Libra on the 9th, Pocket may find that being ’fair and balanced,’ gives him a Paws Up!! with his political agenda. But Bailey may be emotionally drained (as all Virgo born may discover) near the 14th, when the Moon Goddess rules and complicates an important situation.

Libra; The Scales 9.23-10.22
A taste for the finer things makes little Shadow displeased with life when the Queen of Love joins Helios in Libra’s lair on the 16th. And, under the darkness of the New Moon around the 17th, Sandy may exhibit signs of homesickness while on the road. Luxury and comfort will soothe the soul of the Libra born at this time.

Scorpio; The Scorpion 10.23-11.21
The ability to stay motivated wanes as Chelsea finds fault with her sister’s every move but only until fiery Mars moves out of Cancer on the 17th, will emotions dissipate. Our Chow ‘furend’ Leo may find it difficult, near the 18th, to make up his mind and then he’ll have to learn to live with the consequences. Chewie finds that a ‘furendship’ has it’s challenges when a popular poll, needing just a single vote to tip the scales, complicates the situation.

Aquarius; The Water-Bearer 1.20-2.18
Little Pumpkin’s charm and German shepherd Buck’s good nature each face challenges near the 29th, as the Huntress compounds their lives and ability to reason by allowing them to become too emotional. Pisces quickly regains control and the Aquarian born regain their composure thru-out October.

Pisces; The Fish 2.19-3.20
The compassionate side of lovable Smoochy and Bruiser seems to abandon them both, until the Full Moon of the 4th. Luna has made an alliance with the War God, which is advantageous to no one, and Poseidon’s rage knows no bounds. When water ways resume their calmness so does the blood of the Pisces born.

With outstretched arms her joy, of having Helios back in her realm after nearly a year's absence, sends energetic sonic waves thru-out the Universe. But how will Virgo's influence effect us mortals? Overseeing our House of Service and Training her eye for detail may be beneficial or she could be overly critical of our efforts. Sit back on your haunches for a spell and let's all give some thought to this cycle's cosmic puzzle.

Aries; The Ram 3.21-4.19
Isis childes Apollo for rushing head long into ventures without taking a closer look at potential losses. Our 'furend' Prutske, across the pond, may become distraught with emotion near the 25th, when Mars enters into Cancer and begins to cloud sensibilities. Hobo Hudson, forever on a quest for the 'perfect business venture.' should probably not be making any long term commitments until after the Full Moon of the 5th. Selena casts a spell over the Warrior's ability to accurately judge a situation so it's best to wait until she moves on.

Taurus; The Bull 4.20-5.20
The Bull's patience may wear thin near the 8th, when Huntress Diana makes her appearance causing turmoil with the Love Goddess Venus and making it impossible for Tabaatha to make sensible wardrobe choices. Biskit may also find that these two lovely ladies, Ishtar and Aphrodite, don't enjoy sharing space so on the 20th, their joint presence may make concentration nearly impossible.

Gemini; The Twins 5.21-6.21
Mercury, your ruling planet, puts the Twins, Castor and Pollux, to task this month as it first enters Libra on the 25th, presenting Jamal with many 'should I or shouldn't I,' qualms. Making a decision has never been harder but then, so as not to disappoint us, the Messenger reverses all issues by going retrograde. Now even Rocky faces challenges not only in decision making but in understanding what's expected of him. Luna enters the scene on the 10th, driving all emotions into high gear. Things settle down a bit after the 17th, when Ceres once again takes control and sorts thru it all.

Cancer; The Crab 6.22-7.22
The Moon Goddess has only a few days for preparation as she and the Maiden don't make full impact until the 12th, when Foley's emotions begin a skyward climb in an effort to deal with precision and then not making any headway. Brittany, on the other hand, takes a more commanding lead, pays more attention to detail and perhaps surprises those around her by fulfilling some long, sought after achievement.

The Harvest Goddess calms the attentive needs of the beastly Leo until mid September when the Huntress, in the form of the Moon, enters his domain.
